About This Spot

Al-Hussain Restaurant is the kind of place that feels like an easy-going retreat nestled right within the heart of Tampines. As you step inside, the hum of casual chatter mingles with the comforting clatter of dishes, setting a steady, unhurried rhythm that invites you to linger without rush. It’s a neighborhood spot that knows its patrons well — a place where familiar faces cross paths over late-night cravings or weekend breakfasts.

The space balances between bustling and laid-back, where the modest indoor seating is complemented by airy outdoor tables shaded by the tropical Singaporean sky. There’s a warm, lived-in quality here, underscored by the gentle flow of conversations and the steady punctuations of kitchen calls. This isn’t a place that tries to impress by flash — instead, it quietly earns its charm through dependable service and the gentle smiles from folks behind the counter who seem as rooted in the community as the flavors they craft.

At its core, Al-Hussain offers more than just a menu—it presents a tapestry of local and regional tastes that feel both familiar and inviting to explore. The mix of Indian, Malay, and Southeast Asian influences plays out in dishes that carry a home-cooked sincerity. Whether it’s the crispy yet tender prata that’s just right with a cup of thick, sweet teh tarik or a plateful of spiced biryani inviting you to savor each fragrant grain, the food has a way of bringing people together.

The energy here peaks during those late evenings when queues form steadily, mirroring the spot’s role as a trusted haven for those who find comfort in a good meal after hours. Families settling in for quiet breakfasts mix with takeaway seekers on the go, yet every moment feels thoughtfully paced. It’s a place to appreciate food through the lens of daily life—nothing pretentious, just straightforward, honest bites that resonate with the rhythms of the local neighborhood.

More than a restaurant, Al-Hussain feels like a small chapter in the ongoing story of Tampines—a reminder that good food needs nothing more than a welcoming table and a few familiar faces to make it truly memorable.

One of the few places open till late in the area, so expect a crowd at most times. The menu is quite vast with an interesting combination of north, South Indian, Thai and Malay. There was a long queue waiting for takeaway at 10pm! But the wait wasn't too long, the queue moved pretty fast. The Thai Nasi goreng I had wasn't particularly Thai, but tasted very fresh.

Been here quite often to have family breakfast on Sundays. Food is nice and served quite promptly depending on crowd. Personal favourite is this "bird nest" prata with 2 sunny side ups. Ample sitting and outdoor sitting available.

My preferred mamak restaurant in Tampines is Al-Hussain. While their prata is of decent quality and reasonably priced initially, there have been recent indications of price increases. Overall, the dining experience is satisfactory, albeit with the caveat that the prices are somewhat elevated for a neighborhood mamak restaurant.

The Indian rojak was ok. Pretty standard. Coin prata was good. The prata was crispy outside but soft inside. I find the fish curry was flavorful but a bit watery. Chicken rendang briyani was good. The chicken rendang was very flavorful and the chicken meat was cooked till soft. We ordered the mee goreng wrongly. Should have been bee hoon goreng. The mee goreng was heavy but the crispy anchovies were very nice. The tossai was standard.

Final Al-Hussain Restaurant in our neighbourhood. Delicious food inside. Blk 822 Tampines St 81, #01-22, Singapore 520822 We had the opportunity to converse with Sadiq, a counter staff member at Al-Hussain restaurant responsible for customer orders. (In the photo). Meanwhile, another longtime employee named Senthi, whom we've known for approximately ten years, was occupied in the kitchen. We've been dining at this restaurant since 2005. It’s a local Indian Muslim eatery offering a wide range of Indian Muslim dishes. Our favorites include Thosei, such as paper Thosei, masala Thosei, and chapati. They also serve Thai Muslim cuisine. About our favourite dish! The Thosei dish like paper Thosei is particularly well-liked, and my wife is a big fan of it. It’s crispy, freshly prepared, and most enjoyable when served hot — offering a truly satisfying experience. “Eat fresh, feel fresh, and enjoy the crispness." At Al-Hussain Restaurant, delight in the golden crunch of their crispy paper-thosai, where every bite bursts with aromatic allure and delightful crispiness. Although there are many great restaurants in Little India, including Indian and Indian Muslim options, we have visited there several times. This restaurant is conveniently situated in our neighborhood, with markets and six food hawkers centre nearby. The Al-Hussain restaurant has a good business flow and reasonable prices. It accepts CDC vouchers, supporting government initiatives. If you're nearby or happen in the area, we recommend giving it a try. “Jalan Jalan Cari Makan” The phrase "Jalan Jalan Cari Makan" translates to strolling around in search of food. Wishing everyone a great weekend. Happy Deepavali! Chris 16 Oct 2025

Staff are very friendly & helpful. Me and my family always went here for breakfast. When the crowd is huge, the service will be slow please had the patience to wait for your foods. If the crowd is less the service will be fast. It is your luck what time & day you head for your meals. Food here is nice alot of variety to choose from.
